TALKING HEAD OF THE FILM(RENT)

Silence Films

THE LUMIERE BROTHERS

THE LUMIERE BROTHERS

Auguste and Louis were born in Besancon, france in 1862 and 1864, their father was well known Lyons based portrait painter Anthonie Lumiere. They were both sent to technical college and were technical minded.
At the age of seventeen Louis developed a ''new dry'' plate process in 1881, it became known as ''Etiquette Bleue" process. This development boosted his father's business and a factory was built for manufacturing plates in the Monplaisir quarter of the Lyons suburbs. In 1894, because of their father's business success he was invited to a demonstration of Edison's peephole kinetoscope in Paris. He was excited by what he saw and returned to lyons with a piece of kinetoscope film given to him by one of Edison's concessionaires. The brothers worked of the kinetoscope film their father gave in order to produced a better, cheaper and available to all viewing pleasure.

Auguste and Louis work through throughout the ending of 1824 with piece of Edison's film, their aims is to overcome the limitation and problems of kinetoscope. They discovered that the kinetoscope is bulky and the camera is very big, also can only be view by person at a time.

By early 1895 during the French third republic and the reign of President Felix Faure, the brothers had invented their own device combining camera with printer and projector called Cinematographe. The was patented on february 13th 1895, it was much smaller than Edison's Kinetograph and was hand cranked.

The lumieres used a film speed of 16 frame per seconds, much slower compare with Edison's 48 fps- this meant that less film was used and also clatter and grinding associated with Edison's device was reduced, each film is 17 meters long which hand cranked through a projector runs approximately 50 seconds. Louis's decision to incorporate the principle of intermittent movement using a device similar to that found in  sewing machines, this was something Edison had rejected as he struggle to perfect projection using continuous movement. The brothers keeps their invention guarded secret with Auguste  organising private screening.

The first screening was in paris on December 28 1895 at Salon Indien du Grand Cafe, a historical place and time of the first ever film screening in front of large audience with the Cinematographe that could project images to the wall. One the ten film showed was famous- sortie des usines lumiere a Lyon( workers leaving the Lumiere factory).

Louis photographed the world around him and some of his first films were 'actuality' films, like the workers leaving the factory. The brothers began to open theatres to show their films (which became known as cinemas). In the first four months of 1896 they had opened Cinématographe theatres in London, Brussels, Belgium and New York.

Their catalogues grew from 358 titles in 1897 to 1000 in 1898 to 2113 in 1903; although out of the 2113 titles in the 1903 catalogue, less than 50 were the brothers. The rest were taken by other operators like Promio, Doublier and Mesguich. In 1900 the brothers projected a film on a huge 99 x 79 foot screen at the Paris Exposition, after which they decided to curtail their film exhibitions and devote their time to the manufacture and sale of their inventions.
In 1907 they produced the first practical colour photography process, the Autochrome Plate.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

CAMERA MOVEMENT:

Crane shot from RENT

A crane shot is mostly used to indicate that a film has ended but it was used in this movie(RENT) during a concert. Crane shot gives the audience a wider view and panoramic effects.

Tracking shot is used to give the viewer a detailed tour, it's also used to follow a character. See an example below:-

Panning is used to give the viewer a panoramic view of a set/setting. Take a look at an example below:-

NARRATIVE THEORY ON ENDING SCENE OF RENT
Here, I am going to apply TZETAN TODOROV THEORY that suggest most narratives starts with state of equilibrium is which life is 'normal'. This state of normality is disrupted by an outside force,(an outside force is this particular is drug over-dose that almost claim the life of the characters) which has to be fought against in order to return to the state of equilibrium.

FILM MUSIC

TOUCHING THE VOID:- The musical score in this scene from Touching the void reinforce the mood of the character from struggling to hope and then sudden relieve that was over-shadow when the character realised that, this is just the beginning of his predicament. the building of music score from lower temple connote struggling of the character while climbing up the cave but when he look up and saw rays of light the music slow down to symbolises hope before building up in the tempo of musical score again and then reach climax when the character got out. The climax on the music with orchestra effects connote relieve and symbolises mountain scenery. The mood of the is character suddenly change with the musical score with low temple when he realised the this is just the beginning of his predicament. The low musical tempo express the character thoughts and emotions.

The theme music is non-diegetic because you can only hear the sound but  you can't see it in this particular scene.

                                              EITHER YES OR NO

The Relationship of 307 years between Scotland and Great Britain is about to be broken or amended a.k.a The Scottish Independent Referendum. Come Thursday 18 September 2014 the people of Scotland will decide to remain to be part of United Kingdom or not, by voting YES or NO.Whatever the outcome of this Independent Referendum is, both Scotland and Great Britain will never be the same.

In the past Scotland shared a sense of Britishness with Inventors, Craftsman, explorers and industrialists. This unity made theUnited Kingdom a big industrial nation and everybody loves the British identity. According to BBC ONE Panorama, as reported by Allan Little, the relationship started to degenerate in the early 70s. Mines were closed down and most of the shipyards are no longer in operation. In  the 1970s the standard of living dropped - that led to the birth of the SNP - The Scottish Nationalist Party. When North Sea Oil was discovered the Scottish people believed it was time for them to share  power with Westminster which led to the1979 Scotland Assembly Referendum under a Conservative Government. The Scottish view Conservatives as Anti-Scottish and this Referendum failed because Scotland voted narrowly in favour and this did  not meet Westminster requirements. The Labour Party, which was the largest party in Scotland,  pushed the argument of Scotland Assembly and in 1999 the Scottish Assembly was formed.

Earlier in this parliament Alex Salmond, the First Minister of Scotland, brought the issue of referendum to Westminster  under the leadership of Prime Minister David Cameron a Conservative. Three things were brought to the table but only two was agreed on either YES or NO the third option which is enhanced devolution was rejected because the government believe it was going to lead to referendum problems.

David Cameron

''I will be heart broken if this
Family of Nations was torn apart''

Alex Salmond

''Scotland is on the cusp of making
history,The eyes of the world are  on Scotland''

Alistair Darling

''Alex Salmon is misleading Scots about the financial cost of  leaving the UK after the white paper on independence include only scanty page of estimate''

In Scotland, since the Day of Independence Referendum  has  been set for 18 of September 2014 people's opinion are varied. There is the YES Campaign that is massively backed by SNP under The Leadership of First Minister Alex Salmond. On the other hand there is the NO Campaign mainly backed by the Labour Party with Alistair Darling, the largest party in Scotland although both Conservative and Liberal Democrat also support No Campaign. Both sides of the Campaign have been trying to convince people to support them through various means to win people's hearts. An example in graphic illustrations is below:

According to Wall Street Journal more than 130 business leaders have signed an open letter slamming the case for Scottish independence, marking the biggest intervention by the U.K business community in the referendum debate so far. Leaders around the world support the NO Campaign even the IMF worries about Scotland if the YES Campaign wins the referendum debate.

The present Administration has promised Scotland more power and the issue of enhanced devolution has been re-visited which I think in my own opinion makes sense, although this may have a backlash in the case of the people of Wales and Greater Manchester who may ask for the same thing.

In conclusion I think BETTER TOGETHER makes sense if Scottish demand is met and if politics is pushed aside whether it's Labour, Liberal Democrat or Conservative. All political parties should come together to make our Great Nation even Greater. Either YES or NO this Nation will never be the same again.

Comments:
The politicians did not take the Scottish referendum seriously until the date of referendum is vary near, people are not happy about this because they believed the politicians are not sincere in dealing with the tax payers.

Some people complain about the media being biased in their coverage of  the referendum which led to a rally at the BBC headquarters.
